Marvel Allies Again in 2008

In Activision's Q4 / Fiscal 2008 Earnings Conference Call posted earlier today, Activision confirmed that it will be releasing the sequel to Marvel: Ultimate Alliance later this year. Specific platforms were not announced for the game (which had been previously spoken of in rough terms in another financial notice), but given how popular the original game was, we would expect the next Marvel: Ultimate Alliance to be released for every platform imaginable. An exact title was not given for the sequel, so it is possible that the next game will adapt a slightly different name, although it seems safe to guess that gamers can call it "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2" unless Activision gives us a new name for the game.

Speed Racer for Wii

Here's a game we've filed under the "we should know more about this title than we actually do" category. Speed Racer from Warner Bros. Interactive and development studio Sidhe, best known for its PS3 racer GripShift, is, of course, based on the upcoming feature film of the same name. And yes, it's a racing game, as if you couldn't have guessed. But strangely – almost against the odds – it seems to have potential due primarily to its stylized presentation and good sense of speed. Like the movie, it's all about speed – between 350 and 500 miles per hour, to be precise. The game has also been created specifically for Wii, releasing this May, in mind. There is only one other build, a PS2 title, but it won't ship until this fall.

Speed Racer for Wii follows the storyline set forth in the upcoming Wachowski brothers (The Matrix) movie. You compete as the famous Speed Racer in the World Racing League against as many as 19 other racers, all bent on taking first prize – the driver to make it through unpredictable track designs with jumps and loops to the finish line will gain coveted fame and fortune. The game boasts a unique "car fu" mechanic, enabling you to smash, jump and flip your vehicle at will in order to outmaneuver, dodge, nudge (if necessary) and ultimately outrace foes.

You'll be able to choose from more than 20 different driver / car combinations – Speed Racer's Mach 6 and Racer X's Shooting Star included, of course. And adding to the overall presentation, actors Emile Hirsch, Matthew Fox and Christina Ricci have all lent their voices to the title.

We still haven't had the chance to play Speed Racer for Wii so we can't say for certain if it's any good. But judging by the video footage, it certainly doesn't look bad. See it for yourself and be sure to check out the producer interview for more information about the title.

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core

Developed by Yokohama-based Arc System Works, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core is the third instalment in the series and is widely cited as one of the most carefully balanced fighting games in existence, thanks to a refined combat system with three new gameplay modes.

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core features over 20 deadly combatants and includes an alternate EX version of all the existing characters. On top of all this, the game also introduces two reinvented fighters, A.B.A. and Order-Sol, who have never been seen outside of Japan.

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core delivers a range of all-new moves, including the ‘Force Break’, a special move which consumes 25 per cent of the Tension Gauge when used; ‘Slashback’, a form of parrying with reduced block stun; ‘Slip Throws’; and moves which make opponents stick briefly to walls or slide across the floor of a stage.

In addition to major gameplay changes, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core features the first major aesthetic change for the series since the original release. All voices, including that of the announcer, have been re-recorded or replaced with previously unused samples, in some cases with different actors.

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core makes maximum use of the Wii controller, allowing players to move characters with the control pad on the Nunchuk and use the Wii Remote for both simple and special attacks. Some of the less powerful attacks are mapped on the Wii Remote buttons and the special attacks are executed through both button and movement with the Nunchuk or the Wii Remote.

The final layers of polish on Guilty Gear XX Accent Core come with redesigned playable character artwork and two new music tracks, Launch Out and Keep The Flag Flying.

Key Features:

Need for Speed ProStreet

The goal of the game is to become the king of street racing, which you'll accomplish by excelling in different race disciplines, such as drag racing, drift racing, grip racing, and speed challenges. You'll travel to different events in about 14 different locations, and you'll be able to take on multiple races for each event. Racing is much more serious this time around because your cars can be totaled. If you total too many cars at one location, you'll have to start over.

As you might expect, you steer the cars by holding the Wii Remote sideways and tilting it side to side. Unlike Need for Speed Carbon, there won't be any other control schemes to choose from, but to better acclimate players to the sensitivity of tilt steering, the game has three levels of assists. Family mode is the easiest of the bunch, which has the game take care of braking and some of the heavier steering jobs. But it only kicks in when you need it, so if you totally blow a turn, the game assists will kick in and keep you from flying off the side of the road. Racer-level assists are similar to family mode, but less so, giving you more manual control of the action without letting you get too far off the mark. King mode disables most of the assists, also giving you the option to disable antilock brakes, stability, and other car assists. King mode, giving you the highest level of control, will let you get more out of your cars because it won't be kicking in and braking for you. The Wii version of ProStreet handles quite well, overall, and it also looks quite a bit better than Carbon.
