Xbox 360 Played x5 more than Wii x5 more likely to fail that PS3

According to a poll carried out by Game Informer of some 5,000 readers, the Xbox 360 is played some five times more than the Wii, but has a failure rate that five times as much as that of the PlayStation3.

* Usage: 40.3% use their Xbox 360 console for three to five hours a day. Only 37% of PS3 owners play for this long. Compare this to Wii users, where 41.4% use their console for less than an hour a day.
* Console death: The Xbox 360 suffers a whopping 54.2% failure rate, compared to 10.2% for the PS3 and 6.8% for the Wii.
* Repair time: Seems it takes about a month to get an Xbox 360 repaired, compared to around a week for the Wii and PS3.
* Customer loyalty: Only 3.8% of Xbox 360 owners say that hardware failures mean that they won’t buy another Xbox!

You have to take these numbers with a grain of salt because it’s hard to verify such a survey, and ballot stuffing could skew things. That said, the numbers for the failure rates are staggering. If things really are (or at least have been) this bad, then I’m surprised the Xbox 360 didn’t sink the same way the Zune did.

The failure rates are scary, and what makes them worse is that I know of several people who have been through several Xbox 360 consoles … one failure is one thing, multiple failures must really suck, especially if each repair takes a month.

Remember talk of the Wii being nothing more than two GameCubes stuck together with duct tape? Of course you do. Some even said that the Wii is a GameCube with a motion sensitive controller. But what if I told you that Nintendo started to believe the same? Now that, you wouldn't believe I'm sure, but you will shortly.

The study was prompted in part by Veljko Popov, an MD/PhD student at Dartmouth Medical School (DMS) who wanted to help the people in his homeland of Yugoslavia. Using a grant from the Dartmouth International Health Group, Popov and Robert Harris, MD, associate professor of radiology at DMS, visited patients at a remote hospital in Yugoslavia. They used a portable, compact ultrasound unit, donated by Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, to examine several hundred patients but the hospital had no resources to read the ultrasound scans. "Once they had the equipment, they needed an inexpensive way for the images to be read," said Harris.

WiiWare debuts in Japan, new details emerge

According to Nintendo World Report, six of the nine Japanese launch games are online enabled: online multiplayer, leaderboards, or both. Three of the WiiWare launch games use Nintendo's recently announced Pay & Play service, a fancy name for micro transactions that will range in price from $1-3, according to Square-Enix.

In addition to introducing online play to Nintendo downloadable games, WiiWare also supports Nunchuck use, which Virtual Console games do not support.

Regarding Wii's limited storage space, Nintendo World Report reports that all nine Japanese WiiWare launch titles (if purchased and downloaded) would fill 93 percent of Wii's 512MB of internal memory, with little room for anything else.

The most notable games available at launch include Square Enix's Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King ($15), Hudson's Star Soldier R ($8), and Konami's Saku Saku Animal Panic ($10).

WiiWare launches in North America on May 12.

No lightsaber for Wii

Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, coming out on November 9 in the UK on the Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and DS, the latest game will let gamers play through all six Star Wars movies in a mash-up of the first two games, along with some new surprises.

Smith started the event by explaining that some members of the press had become confused about what was coming in the demo.

"This press release came out, and I think people heard what they wanted to hear. It said something like, use your Wii Remote as a lightsaber... It's no secret that your character has a lightsaber and you fight with it, but I think many people took that to mean that we'd created a new peripheral." Not wanting to let those people down, Smith said that he would be trying something in the talk to see if it would work.

He duct-taped his son's lightsaber to the Wii Remote. "Here is the Wii lightsaber, TM," He joked. "Anyone can make one of these at home." The experiment seemed to work with a surprising amount of success, but Jonathan soon separated the two. He explained why, sadly, he thinks that a Wii lightsaber peripheral might not work. He said, "In the real world it's much easier to use the original Wii Remote because it's much lighter and it doesn't make your arm hurt... There are design reasons why it might not be great, because you'd miss a lot of the time--you're not going to be able to fight with style. You're not a Jedi, you know. So, we very, very quickly thought that it's not going to happen in this game."

The new game will be big, explained Smith. "It's a vast game. A massive game. An almost amazingly huge game." But size isn't all that matters: The game will also boast a host of new features and levels, including a variety of environments that have been redone to "make them more fun." Gamers will also be able to play as some 120 playable characters (some of which will need to be unlocked) and take them into scenes where they don't originally appear.

There will also be a variety of new levels, including some which were missing from the first two games, Lego Star Wars and Lego Star Wars 2, such as Anakin's Fight and a podracer. He showed the Lego Towns level, where you enter a Lego city and have to complete tasks such as rescuing a kitten from the top of a cathedral. The character customiser has also been much improved, and now allows gamers the full range of Lego bits and pieces from both the original games to customise a character with. Smith commented, "You can create really outrageous character customisations."

Smith also hinted that despite the title, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga might not be the last Lego-themed Star Wars game. He said, "We've made games that encompass the six movies, but the Star Wars universe is so big, and there is lots of stuff that could be done, particularly in a Lego way."

When asked by a member of the audience if he knew what George Lucas thought of the use of his beloved franchise as a Lego video game, Smith said, "I understand that he thought it was 'awesome.'" .
